MAPI and 24x7 running as an NT Service

I have created a job (JAL script) that uses only the MailSend command. I setup the service to use the correct NT user and the job will send the script message and the notifications correctly. However when the job is run when 24x7 is run as an NT Service I get some very peculiar errors. (Exchange Mail Server)

What do you think the problem could be?

MAPI doesn't work when 24x7 is running as a service. Please either run it from the Startup folder as a standalone application or use SMTP email interface. I am sure your Exchange Mail Server has SMTP gateway.

Actually, I found an article on this web site that states that it is possible using the sendmail.exe in the Exchange resource kit. Please explain.

SENDMAIL uses SMTP. Why don't you want to configure 24x7 to use SMTP also?

Old 24x7 versions didn't support SMTP, that's why that SENDMAIL tip was posted. Newest versions provide direct support for SMTP and I don't see why anyone would use the SENDMAIL now.
