[7.0.132 beta] FR - Connection dialog |
|
When opening Server Name dropdown list, the servers are shown as "IP (Connection Name)". It would be nice if they were rather shown as "Connection Name (IP)". Or at least if it could be chosen to show that way.

Well, it's not really IP (Name) or Name (IP), it's how you enter it in the connections. If you connect to your servers by server name, not IP, then name will appear in front. For example, when I connect to one of out test SQL servers referring to its network name JUPITER and not specifying a database name, letting it choose the default one, and I see only JUPITER in the connections drop-down, if I specify master database, then it appears as JIPITER (master)

I'd have some recommendations to enhance this feature.
Having the server by name is useful. But when the server is given by IP it's not very 'talkative' to display that first instead of the connection name. Also, there's a checkbox for saving connection data but it isn't clear which connection it is going to be saved to since it isn't shown anywhere on the dialog. Besides, I'm not really sure how it is sorted. Server name? Connection name? Connection order in Options > Connections?
Therefore I'd suggest separating those two. There could be a droplist (select or enter) for connections and a another one for the server name. Modifying either of them could fill in the rest of the dialog data. This way you could select based on either connection name (easier to remember as you choose it) or server name (it's given and can be either completely meaningless or non-unique such as an IP or server name). It would make the process of saving connection from the dialog a bit more logical.
The database droplist contains the list of databases entered so far but it could contain the list of the actual databases on that server.
The status bar and the tab name in SQL Editor shows the (possibly non-unique) server name. If they would show the connection name instead (provided it is provided :) ) it would be way more informative. This one applies to the windows for comparison and code repository as well.
I'd also suggest an alternative behavior for automatic connect. Right now when I open a new tab in SQL Editor the connection of the new tab is the same as the last connection that had auto connect enabled. That's fine when someone works with a single server and database pair but it can become painful to always have to change the connection when someone works with multiple ones. A more sophisticated solution would be to auto connect to the same connection the tab has from which the new tab was initiated. This would have something from both worlds, for those working with one connection would notice no difference. Those with multiple connections would have not have to change in case they want the same connection they used.
Of course, these can get pretty complicated when it comes to implementing them, I checked the user guide. Still, I think this is an area where there's a need for some massive improvements.
