SQL Assistant with VS 2012 |
|
I have been using SQL Assistant with SSMS for years. I am going to start using SQL Server Data Tools with VS 2012. I have it loaded and set to load the plugin. When I open up a query window, connect to a DB and start typing it opens up a SQL Assistnat window to connect to a database (even though I am already connected). Should this happen? seems very odd to me. I would think it would act like SSMS.
Also, I don't see SQL Assistant menus in VS. Should I? I think I just don't have it setup correctly.

Please try once starting both SQL Assistant and VS in Run as Administrator mode. Please let us know if this helps.

I now have the menus (which is good) but its still trying to connect o the DB using the SQL Assistant dialog. In SSMS it just uses the connection that SSMS makes. Shouldn't it work the same with VS?

No. It doesn't work the same way in VS. VS db connection is not accessible to SQL Assistant and that's why it needs its own connection.
Please use the Auto-connect option to avoid repeating connection prompts.

I change database and servers a lot. Will this cause issues? Will I have to change the connection in VS and SQL Assistant every time I change database/servers?

Does the contents of SQL Assistant popups change when you change the database context?
