SQL Assistant and Visual Studio 2010 |
|
Hello,
I have installed SQL Assistant Professional Edition version 6.1.35 - fully purchased, not a demo.
It will not work with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Edition. I get the error:
The Add-in 'SQL Assistant VS Add-In' failed to load or caused an exception.
Would you like to remove this Add-in?
If you choose yes, you will need to reinstall the Add-in to use it again.
Error message: Class not registered
Error number: 80040154
I have followed the instructions in the PDF regarding troubleshooting add-on registration. None of the directories existed and the manifest was not in place. I have manually created them and positioned the manifest. I have made the required changes to the manifest to fully qualify the location of the SQL Assistant files. None of this has worked.
I have run the SQL Assistant as Administrator and chosen No and then Yes to the Register SQL Assistant Add-on option in the options. This has not worked.
Please help us resolve this issue. Thank you.

Hello.
Please try the following
1. Start SQL Assistant in "Run as Administrator" mode.
2. Open SQL Assistant Options dialog and locate Visual Studio target, select it.
3. Expand Advanced options group on the right. Change Register Add-on option to No and click Apply button. Change the value back to Yes, and click Apply button again. You can close Options after that.
4. Start Visual Studio in "Run as Administrator" mode. Check if you still get the add-in failed to load error. If not, open any database editor or SQL script, and type SELECT. Check SQL Assistant prompt appears in the editor. If yes, right-click in the editor. Check SQL Assistant menu branch appears in the right-click menu.
Please let us know if that helps. If you still get an error after step 4, please email %APP_DATA%\SQL Assistant\6.1\SQLAssist.log file to support.

Hi, thanks for the quick response.
I'm double checking the login I used for the administrator step - I have admin privilegies but that may not be the same thing. Unfortunately security is pretty buttoned down here so I need to arrange for someone to come and log in as Administrator in order to check this step.
Were the steps regarding the manifest necessary?
I'll be in touch with an update ASAP.
Thanks again,
Steve

OK, we have:
Run both SQL Assistant and Visual Studio 2010 as Administrator.
In SQL Assistant, selected MS Visual Studio - expanded the Advanced tree and set "Register SQL Assistant Add-on" to No (then Apply) and then to Yes (then Apply).
In VS2010, under Tools > Add-in Manager checked the SQL Assistant VS Add-In (Available Add-ins and Startup)
Receive the same error (80040154)
Unfortunately, no SQLAssist.log file is being created anywhere on my machine. Is there somewhere I need to set that option on?
Regards,
Steve

OK, how do I do this in XP? You advised:
"1. Start SQL Assistant in "Run as Administrator" mode."
So I followed Microsoft's guide:
To start a program as an administrator
1. In Windows Explorer, click the program executable file that you want to open.
2. Press SHIFT and hold, right-click the program icon, and then click Run as.
3. To log on using an Administrator account, click The following user.
4. In User name and Password, type the Administrator account name and password that you want to use.
I've run SQL Assistant and VS2010 in this mode, to no avail.
Thanks.

I should add that SQL Assistant is working perfectly for the following products on the same PC:
Visual Studio 2005
Visual Studio 2008
SQL 2000 - Enterprise Manager
SQL 2000 - Query Analyser
SQL Server Management Studio 2005
SQL Server Management Studio 2008
Just VS2010 with the issue.

Steve

Oh, I'm sorry, I incorrectly assumed you are running Windows 7. There is no such run mode in Windows XP.
If using Windows XP, you need to login as a local admin and perform the same steps. But if you say, its already working with VS 2005 and VS 2008, that shouldn't be an issue. I guess the issue might be multiple VS versions on the same system and the add-on registration fails because it copies add-on settings and files to some wrong directory, for example if it finds VS 2008 before VS 2010.
Our VS add-on developer is currently on vacation, returning next week. We may need his help with troubleshooting that issue. Please remind me next week to get you in touch with the developer.
Thanks

Hi, no problem - sorry I didn't mention that (XP) earlier.
OK, I'll pick this up then. One last thing I have noticed - in the manifest there is an entry for VS2010 Pro, but nothing for Ultimate - could this be a clue?
Thanks for all your help, speak to you soon.

Could you please check you have the follow key in the registry and let us know if it is present?
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{754CF073-05B2-4E97-880D-1D88D8D514BE}
and also verify the path in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{754CF073-05B2-4E97-880D-1D88D8D514BE}\InprocServer32\CodeBase is correct.
