Post How to setup to read email from Lotus Notes Reply with quote
Hi,

When I change email Interface to 'Lotus Notes', the scheduler keeps prompting me 'Lotus Notes installation directory is not found, update WIN.INI'. Please advise how to update WIN.INI to let the scheduler recognize my NOTE client information.

Thanks,
Felix

This is an old legacy interface. It is for use with old Lotus Notes clients that do not support Windows MAPI interface. When chosen, 24x7 expects to find Lotus Notes client registration record in the win.ini file, like below

[LotusMail]
Program=c:\notes\notes.exe

This is used to locate Notes executable and install 24x7 mail extensions.

If you got one of the recent Lotus Notes versions, do not use it this legacy interface. Use SMTP instead. This method does not need Notes client and it is much more efficient.

Hi,

I had the same problem with Felix

I set the email interface options to SMTP and add a "e-mail watch" job to read a mail from Lotus notes, A error message log appear "Retrieving mail failed: Logon Failed!" when the job run.

The email SMTP interface setting is correct; I already tried to send the email successfully.

Question is:

1. "e-mail watch" Account field should be email address, right?

2. Am I need to install anything such as MAPI(MS Outlook) client or need to set any parameters?

- As the document "24x7 Automation Suite User's Guide and JAL Reference" states that

"For SMTP interface, the 24x7 Scheduler currently supports sending e-mail with or without attachments only. It does not support receiving e-mails. If you setup an "e-mail watch" job, 24x7 Scheduler will use the MAPI interface to check for incoming e-mails."

Thanks,
Eric

Hi,

The SMTP protocol (by RFC definition of this protocol) is used for email sending only. Period. It has nothing to do with email receiving. The receiving is handled by POP3 or Windows MAPI. No matter what you enter in the global options, in 24x7 Scheduler Windows editor only MAPI is used for receiving. To make it work with Lotus Notes, you must have Notes, Outlook or other MAPI email client installed on the computer running 24x7.

If you want to use POP3 (Notes is not required) you have 2 choices:
1. 24x7 Event Server
2. 24x7 Scheduler Multi-platform Edition.

Having said that I can now answer your questions
Quote:
1. "e-mail watch" Account field should be email address, right?

In 24x7 Scheduler Windows edition - this is your MAPI profile name, for example "Outlook Profile" (as it appears in the Windows Control Panel in email settings), in all other 24x7 products - this is your email address

In 24x7 Windows Edition - yes, you must have MAPI client installed, in all other, no you don't need it.

How about I only have Lotus notes client to receive Lotus notes database mail in my machine, and can't find any "Outlook Profile" in Control Panel (because I don't have MS Outlook installed in my machine).

In 24x7 Scheduler Windows edition

1. Where can I find my MAPI profile name? Using my Lotus Notes Login ID?

Thanks a lot,

"Outlook Profile" was referenced only as a sample name.

1. To see what you got, open Windows Control Panel, double-click Mail icon, on the Mail Setup dialog, click Show Profiles.
If you are no profiles or no Mail icon, it only means that your Notes client is not installed with MAPI option.

2. Answer is No. Any MAPI compliant email program is as good if not better than Outlook, consider Notes MAPI client, Eudora, Netscape Novel GroupWise, just to name a few.

and 3) as I stated earlier, you don't really need to use MAPI if you switch to 24x7 Multiplatform Edition or to 24x7 Event Server.

Hope this helps.

By the way, 24x7 still supports Lotus Notes legacy interface based on using Notes extension agent. Open Tools/Options menu in 24x7, change email interface to Lotus Notes. It might work if you still run old Notes version, I think so because old recent Notes install MAPI interface by default. If you want to give it a try, make sure in the windows.ini file you have the following

[Notes]
Program=full name of notes.exe file including full path

Hi,

I am using POP3 to receive email instead of Lotus Notes now. I already created a MAPI profile in control panel and I can receive email in MS Outlook 2003 without any error. However, no response when I use 24x7 Windows Edition to receive email and trigger a job. Here are the steps I create the email watch job. Please correct me if something goes wrong. Thank you very much.

1. Tools -> Options -> Email and Pager options
2. Email interface: MAPI
3. Send method: by Name
4. File -> New -> Job
5. Click Schedule button (Assume I already specify the job command which is to execute an exe file)
6. Run this job: When certain email message is received
7. Click the profile link and select the MAPI profile
8. Enter password
9. Subject: Testing
10. Text: Testing
11. Save message attachements: Checked
12. Every 1 minutes
13. Click Finish button
14. Save
15. Send an email with Subject=Testing & Body=Testing

I wait a long long time but no response for the scheduler. Something goes wrong? Please help. Thank you very much.

Thanks a lot,

Eric

Try this:
1. Start 24x7.
2. Send a few test emails to yourself, but not open them in Outlook.
3. Close Outlook and wait for few minutes.
4. Reopen Outlook and verify the emails have "read" status . If yes, 24x7 found them but they didn't trigger the job because their subject/message couldn't be matched.

In the latest case in the job properties, for the email text to monitor, enter asterisk symbol *
Check if it makes any difference.

By the way, when you send emails send them in plain text so that the text is exactly what you see, not what composes the message for display (such as HTML tags, white spaces, end of line characters, etc…)

I already tried your suggestion and the emails have "read" status.

So, what should I enter in Subject fields if I only want to trigger the job when "Testing" Email Subject is found?

Should be which one
1. Testing
2. "Testing"
3. Testing*
4. "Testing"*
5. "Testing*"

Thank you very much,

Eric

The issue is likely with the message body, not the subject. Subject is always in plain text and can be easily matched. Try specifying asterisk for the message body which means anything and specifying Testing without double quotes for the subject. Hope this helps.

It works finally.

Thank you very much.

Also, I found that the default email client setting in IE browser should be set to the email client you want to receive (for example MS Outlook / Lotus Notes).

P.S. Suggest add some tips or instructions on the email watch setting screen (e.g. Specifying asterisk (*) wild card for the message body) or specify in the manual
