Post 24x7 Job Hangs Reply with quote

1. We have a FoxPro program that creates an Excel spreadsheet.
This program runs OK through the 24x7 Scheduler manually but
fails if run as a service through the scheduler. It creates
both the FoxPro and Excel .exe's but then nothing executes or
completes (no log messages to go by). I've set the job to run
'detached' and tried both 'hidden' and 'normal' window sizes
to no avail. Also, the job runs fine via the native W2K scheduler.
Any ideas here?

2. I'd like to install your 24x7 Scheduler 3.4.1 upgrade. Is
there a way to save/protect the jobs that we have currently
prior to running the upgrade?

Thanks.

Q/A 1: Do you use the same account for W2K scheduler service and for 24x7 Scheduler service?

Does your FoxPro progrom access any networked files or databases?

Q/A 2: Notmally you do not need to do anything as the setup program will simply update oldest files, but just in case backup your job database file if you are still using Examples Jobs.dat.

Yes.

Our Foxpro program accesses an Excel spreadsheet that is
on the network via a mapped local drive (v:\ in this case).
Also the spreadsheet is then saved locally using a fully
qualified path in the program code (\\fc16\egateway_report\excelspreadsheet.xls
in this case). Excel can start OK (I can see it in the W2K Task Mgr.)
but nothing happens after that.

Services that are started by the system on startup (not manually by the user) cannot use drive mapping. You must use UNC file names like \\fc16\egateway_report\excelspreadsheet.xls for all types of operations.
Your Excel program possible shows a message box saying that it cannot open the specified v:\... file, but the box is invisible because the program itselve runs on the invisible services Desktop.

To proof this is the case use BindDesktop utility (see http://www.softtreetech.com/24x7/script.htm)
to run your Excel on the user Desktop. Please do not confuse this with the Window size/show/hide job property which in this case you need to set to either Normal or Maximized).
