Post Remote Agent Reply with quote

I was trying to set up a remote agent with the trial version I downloaded and I keep getting the message that the remote server is not running, even though I'm looking at the screen and 24x7 Scheduler is up and running. Do you have to run things as a service in order to use remote agents or am I missing something else? I thought I followed all the instructions in the user guide correctly.

No, you don't have to run them as a service. Here is "Setting connection to Remote Agent (example)" link that might be helpful: http://www.softtreetech.com/24x7/archive/agent.htm

Although that page is for 24x7 version 2, the same instructions can be applied to version 3.

I see what I missed. I didn't have remote agent started on my other system. I thought I just had to set it up as a remote agent in the options. Should I have it configured as normal instead?

I can connect to it now, but it's not seeing the remote jobs and if I update, it overwrites the jobs that are there. Is this due to the fact that the remote system is set up as a remote agent and not as normal?

How are you trying to see remote jobs?
How do you "update/overwrite" jobs?
Are you connecting to a Remote Agent or remote Master Scheduler? Are you using the Remote Control or you are running some job(s) in another instance of Scheduler or Agent?

Please let me know more details, steps you make, what you expect to get, etc... so I can answer your questions

I'm using remote control to connect to a remote system. I've had the remote system set for normal and remote agent startup. Basically, I expected to see the list of folders and jobs that are on the remote system when I start the remote control. I also expected to be able to add new jobs, but that isn't an available option. The list appears to have been overwritten once when I selected file\update remote host. Now, I can create jobs on my master server to run on the remote system without a problem, so the rest of this isn't as big an issue.

24x7 Remote Agent (24x running in Remote Agent mode) doesn't store job definitions so that you cannot see jobs and folders when you connect to it. You may still want to connect to Remote Agents to monitor active (running) jobs submitted by you and other people/schedulers/agents

Opposite to 24x7 Remote Agent, 24x7 Master Scheduler does store jobs and folders and you should be able to see them after you make a succesfull connection. When you connect to a 24x7 Master using your 24x7 Remote Control, it downloads from the Master definitions of all jobs, folders and settings so you cannot work with them locally (please note that it doesn't overwrite your local jobs and settings). When you press the save button (or use File/Update Remote... menu), only the jobs that were changed are updated on the Master. You still should be able to add new jobs if your account is allowed to (see security settings for more info). To add a new job, make sure to highlight the desired target folder then the New Job option will become enabled.

So my best bet is to create all the jobs on the maseter and run them on the remote agents from there. No problem. Thanks.

Sorry for typo error in my previous message. In the second paragraph I meant to say "so you CAN work with them locally"

Yes, you can do that if you whant to manage and monitor all jobs in one place and be able run them locally and on any networked computer with 24x7 Remote Agent installed.
