When it is set to anything other than None, the brackets and words under the caret are no longer highlighted. I guess the background for the current line is assigned last and it overrides any other backgrounds previously assigned to any location on that line. Also, moving the caret around makes the highlighting flicker in case the word at the caret's new location is the same as it was at the old location. Check this short video here.
