Post GUI Console start up fails with Java launcher error Reply with quote
24x7 multiplatform 5.1 running on windows server 2016.
Was working without problem for a long time .

Clicking the desktop icon to start the GUI gives this error:
Error : Could not create the Java virtual machine.
Error : A fatal exception has occurred . Program will exit.

I've tried these workarounds:
1) change javaw.exe to run as admin.
2) increase the size of the memory allocation in master.bat changed -Xmx1024 to -Xmx2048
3) change javaw.exe to run in windows 7 compatibility mode
4) uninstall and then reinstall 24x7

Two of the 3 servers where 24x7 is installed are failing . One continues to work.

The 24x7 service seems to be running normally and processing jobs on all 3 servers.
Its just the GUI that is having a problem.

Any helpful ideas?

5.1 runs on the very old JVM 6. Which maybe incompatible with latest Windows updates or even get blocked by an antivirus. You can try updating just Java to a more recent version which may or may not work well. There are a few things that are known to be not backward compatible. My recommendation is upgrading the scheduler to the latest version 6.0. It runs internally more recent Java version 8

Somebody recently reported the same error on Windows 2016 server. We still don't know for sure what's causing it, appears like something fairly recent, but here is a known simple workaround. Install 24x7 on a desktop older windows machine, and then copy c:\24x7 folder to the server running windows 2016. Update permissions for the copied folder and add yourself, not a group, to the list of users with full permissions .

One more thing. If on startup you see an error saying that the encryption key length is incompatible, you will need to change in preferences.xml the settings value from 192 to either 128 or 256 which should make it work with Windows 2016 server.⁴

I have confirmed this:
The original problem in this post is caused by Trend Micro Antivirus.

When turning off the AV the 24x7 gui works properly.

I will install the new version using the workaround you provided.

thanks for your help.

Sure. If we can help with anything else, please let us know.

P.S. like in version 5.x, if you're not running it as a service, it's recommended to use Run as Administrator when running it in the desktop mode.

version 5.1 is running as a service. I do want version 6 to run that way too.

Since I've run the install on an old PC , how should I install this as a service when I copy the files to the win2016 server?

the documentation mentions srvany and the NT resource kit but that makes me a little nervous...

any recomendations for making my manual install run as a service?

Back up your existing files to a separate folder, say if they are in C:\24x7, copy them to C:\24x7_5 and then copy new version to C:\24x7 replacing the existing files. All your service settings should continue working as before. For the very first run, start 24x7 in desktop mode in run as Administrator mode, and then use File/Upgrade Old Job Database menu to convert your 5.1 job database to the new version. It will prompt you for the file, a copy of which you can select from C:\24x7_5 folder.

I did what you suggested.

I converted the jobs database on my "older windows system" before I installed the folder on the server as you suggested.

I cannot access / run the 24x7 gui console . When I run master.bat a window flashes quickly and then closes.
At least I'm not getting the Java Launcher error.

(I was running as admin; I was careful to set the security on the new 24x7 folder exactly as the old one (individual rights now group...))

The good news is that the service does seem to be running and starting jobs.

Ideas on how to fix this?
thanks

Instead of double-clicking master.bat

Open new console cmd.exe in Run ad Administrator mode (this is important, not the same as having admin account)

Change current directory to c:\24x7 or wherever you copied it to.
cd c:\24x7

Execute cmd /C master.bat

If that doesn't print a meaningful error to the console and the GUI still doesn't start, try

cmd /C master.bat nogui

Please let us know what you get.

In the same window, can you please try

C:\24x7\jre\bin\java.exe -Xmx1024m -Xverify:none -jar jscheduler.jar

Any errors printed?

I copied that line from master.bat file and substituted %JAVA_HOME% with a hard coded path. Please take a look at master.bat, can you see what may go wrong with that simple file?
