Please try disabling the "background performance analysis" option and check if that improves the speed.

Though it was not enabled, I enabled and disabled it again. It did not help, not even after restarting the Management Studio. They don't seem to be related. Switching between two empty query windows is slow as well. Removing and restoring the message window (CTRL+R) suffers from the same illness.

Thank you for confirming. Which SSMS version are you running? Which Windows version? How slow is the switching between the editor tabs?

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 10.50.2500.0
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 10.50.2500.0
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.1.7601.17514
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0.7601.17514
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.5446
Operating System 6.1.7601 (Win 7 Prof 32-bit SP1)
The time required to display the contents of the query window is somewhere between 1.3 and 1.5 seconds. CTRS+R is a bit faster (0.7-0.8 seconds). Suspending SA makes no difference. They are instant with SA turned off.
