How to Troubleshoot Job that Hangs Occasionally |
|
First, I am running Windows version 3.4.24 of 24x7.
Last night I had a job hang in my scheduler. It is started based on the presence of a trigger file. According to the log the trigger file was found as normal. Here is the first log entry:
12/10/2009 20:03:34:016 0 2 MDM BudgetParentUpdate Semaphore file(s) \\hounafas003\etl_essbase01\prod\MDM\SapToMDMComplete.txt found. Submitting job to the queue.
Entries like this continued in the log all night, however the batch job that it is supposed to run never ran. This instance of 24x7 runs as a service, after checking the log I decided to stop the service. (I would have liked to have checked the queue but I'm not sure how to do that when 24x7 is running as a Windows service). I re-started 24x7 on the server (not as a service) and immediately the problem job ran and everything seem to work fine.
I'm trying to determine what went wrong, this has happened one other time a few months back. The job is set up to run as an Asynchronous process with the window hidden in the default queue, priority is high.
Thanks for your help,
Jeff

Have you had a chance to look at this?

Hi,
That description of this issue sounds like the queue was blocked by some other job or a previous instance of the same job. The provided small fragment of the log is not enough to reconstruct the history.
In regard to monitoring queues and managing queued jobs in service mode, you can use either 24x7 Remote Console or 24x7 Web-based Management Console for that purpose. They connect to remote 24x7 Scheduler instances much like database clients connect to database servers, and allow managing 24x7 and its processes remotely. These consoles may require additional licenses if you don't already have them.

Is the remote console different from the remote agent? I have the remote agent installed and I connect to the server which is running 24x7 as a windows service. However, the queue button in greyed out when I do that.

The official name of the console is 24x7 Remote control. It is the same 24x7 software, just a different function is different. The icon for the remote control, should be in the Windows start menu, next for agent and scheduler icons.
The queue icon is disabled likely because you connect to an agent, not a scheduler. Agents don't have queues, they just run whatever they are instructed to run.

I must be doing something wrong.
I am running the remote control piece of the software on my client ("C:\Program Files\24x7 Automation 3\24X7.EXE" /RCONTROL). I am connecting to a server which is running in "normal" service mode, not "remote agent" service mode. However, the queue is still greyed out.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

Do you have the web-console installed?

Is that the best option?

I think this is the best option for monitoring and managing jobs remotely, from virtually any device.
