Event Server monitoring different Event Viewer Logs |
|
I'm trying to setup some event server jobs that watch the Event Viewer Logs. I have a slight problem, it seems that if the event log name is longer than 15 characters that it won't see the correct log and catch the events. Also in the wizard it only lists Applicaiton, System, and Security. We want to be able to trap errors and such from all of the possible logs, DNS Server, DIrectory Service, IIS and so on. Is there a way to watch those?
Thanks

The New Event Wizard screen has a modifiable drop-down for the log name. You are not limited by the 3 predefined choices; you can type in any log name you want. Yet, the Wizard screen is somewhat limited to 15 characters. Here is how you can workaround this issue. Enter any unique name you want, finish the event setup using the Wizard and save changes. Open 24x7es.ini file in the Notepad, find the unique name of the log you entered using the Wizard and modify it as required. I think the real limit is around 255 characters.

Ok, that makes sense and when I edited the .ini file it displayed the correct name. In reading the help pdf i am getting the feeling that if I want to monitor the event log of a different pc I won't be able to. Is this correct? I've set the "Event Computer" to the server I want to monitor but after reading the help file am i right in understanding that pertains to the log entry and not the actual server? I'm thinking I need to install Event server on every box I want to monitor.

That's correct. You either need to install 24x7 on the other server to monitor its logs or in Win2003 and later take advantage of the log forwarding feature and make windows send logs to one common place.
