I have remote systems running 24x7 Automation suite 3.4.2. I would
like to upgrade them to the latest rev. They are not pointed to a single source. They
are actually all standalone (they are, however, attached to the network)

I can use utilities to run upgrades, however, I had seen in the past that
you suggested just copying specific files to the 24x7 subdirectories to enable
certain functions. Can this also be used for upgrades?

In most cases you can simply copy .LIB files.
Just to be safe copy .DLL, and .EXE files as well.

Essentially, you're saying that if I copy the files over
it will still work and be licensed. Then of course, I'd
have to restart 24x7....?

Think of this as a quick installation method. That's all. But you should be aware that this will method does not always work and might be used only to copy/install fixes (third digit in the version number). Maintanence releases and major versions should installed using the provided installation program.

In order to copy files you need to stop 24x7 first because the destination files are locked while the program is running.
