when I try to open a message sent using dbmail I get this message

"the custom form could not be opened. Outlook will use an outlook form instead.
the object could not be found"

Why , and how to avoid it

Which DB Mail version are you running?
Which email interface are you using?

If you are using SMTP interface, have you tried selecting different encoding method?
Have you tried the most recetn version 1.1.03?

Outlook 97 where DB mail is running , and the client is outlook 2000 where the msg is sent

All mail messages sent from DB Mail using MAPI interface are actually produced by your MAPI client. DB Mail just calls appropriate MAPI functions that create and send the message. Probably, some differences in settings between your MAPI client and the receiving Outlook client cause "the custom form could not be opened. Outlook will use an outlook form" warning.

If you are not sure, please let us know how you send the message, a code sample might be helpful.
