I'm having the same hanging problem, but only 1 monitor. SQL Assistant 12.4.476 SSMS 19.2.56.2
If SQL Assistant is open it hangs before "connect to server".
If I close SQL Assistant it will get to Connect to Server, but then hang with the popup open (before clicking anything).
SQL Assistant closed and deleting C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 19\Common7\IDE\Extensions\SQLAssistant allows it to connect and open Object Explorer, but New Query hangs.
SQL Assistant open but "Register SSMS Add-On" to NO, SSMS hangs before "connect to server"
Reinstalling SQL Assistant does not help.
Repaired SSMS, but Register SSMS Add-ON still no. Allowed SSMS to open with SQL Assistant open. Registering Add-On to Yes and Apply. SSMS hangs on open.

If you have Microsoft Process Explorer installed, can you please check the stack trace of the main SSMS thread when it hags to see what the tread is waiting for?

Thank you! This is useful. May I ask you to reproduce it again and check if the call stack is similar each time? If the top two lines are ntdll.dll!TpCallbackIndependent -> SqlAssistPrefs.dll!__dbk_fcall_wrapper

Thank you very much for the screenshots. We would need some time to analyze the call stack, this doesn't seem to be a trivial issue.

We are working on it, and very much want to fix it as soon as possible. Don't have an ETA yet, the main issue is that we're unable to reproduce it on our test systems and so we unable to debug it. The stack traces shared with us so far don't show an obvious issue within SQL Assistant plugin, it's not active doing something while SSMS is freezing on startup. More stack traces can help us identify a common pattern. If you are able to reproduce this issue on demand, please work with us to identify the root cause. Please send your stack traces to the support account, we very much need them.

You could try SSMS 19.3.

Strangly it was working for me for the last 6 months or so...today I got a Dell BIOS-Update Version 1.23.0 via Dell Command. And after the update, SSMS started to freeze again :/
The workaround is: change the custom scaling for the mainscreen in preferences of System/screen. Change it from 125% to 100% scaling. Then I can start SSMS. After that I can change the scaling back to 125% and it is working fine.
I will try SSMS 19.3

Super useful finding.
Is there an issue with any scaling factor other than 100% or with 125% only?

I have the same problems as PosBr3n2084. And also suddenly no problems over months.
But after reinstall my Windows 11 on my HP Laptop my problem is back.
My workaround is... change the mainscreen from the plugged in monitor (scaling 100%) to my Laptop monitor (scaling 125%). Which also works is to change scaling on my mainscreen.
I working on SSMS 19.3.

Thank you all for confirming. I think it's fair to say that issue is specific to multiple monitors with different screen resolution (DPI) and scaling factors. The issue seems to be specific to some combinations of hardware and software, and is occurring below the application code layer in internally used dependent libraries. The related support ticket SA#37276 is open and we're still testing different options looking for a good fix without side effects.
