Install multiple instances of the scheduler servers |
|
Hi,
We are using 24x7 Scheduler Multi-platform and have some questions regarding the installation of multiple instances of the scheduler.
We have two job databases DevJobDB.dat and QAJobDB.dat and we want to use the web console to manage them separately. It looks like the scheduler can only manage one job database at a time, so we might want to install 2 instances of the scheduler for the 2 job databases. Is this the right approach? However, since the web console can only connect to one instance of the scheduler; therefore we might want to install 2 instances of the web console as well. If we install 2 instances of the web console, how do we configure the web console to connect to the right scheduler?
Thank you.

Hi,
To run 2 instances you can just install them into 2 different directories. Configure each instance to listen on different network ports.
In order to use the same web console with 2 instances on the same box, you will need to make minor customization to the login page to allow specifying port number as a separate field or using host:port notation and connecting on the selected port.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if you need help with the login page customization.
By the way, why do you want running 2 separate job database files, and not just using separate job folders in the same file? Note that in a web console, only Admins and Operators can see all jobs. All other jobs can see their own jobs and folders only. Form a maintenance point of view, it is so much easier to deal with a single instance.
Regards

Hi,
We want to keep the dev, qa, and production jobs separately in different databases. Once a user logs in to the web console, he should only see either dev, qa, or production jobs. Is there a better approach to achieve this other than keep them in separate databases?
Thanks

Hi,
I have another question regarding the ports the schedulers use. If I run multiple instances of the scheduler server on the same box, I have to configure different ports for each instance. However, I was able to start multiple instances on the same box without changing any port numbers. I was expecting to have a port conflict as soon as I started the second instance. But it did not happen and everything seemed to be working fine. Can you explain why?
Thanks

Network interfaces are not enabled by default. That's why you didn't see any conflicts. You need to explicitly enable them in the Tools/Options menu, Network tab (or make the same change manually in preferences.xml file)

Hi,
I have a hard time trying to understand the communication mechanism between scheduler and agent. By default, the agent will listen to port 1096 for jobs submitted from the scheduler. Once the job finishes on the agent side, the agent should talk back to the scheduler to report the job status [I assume], what port on the scheduler side that the agent connect to? It cannot be 1096 or 1097 because the server reserves these ports for server and remote control mode respectively. Am I correct?
I'm trying to set up the web console to connect to the scheduler. What should I do on the scheduler to enable the connection from the web console?
Thanks a bunch.
