Post Disable SQL Assistant for XML view pane only Reply with quote
Is there a way to make SQL Assistant ignore the XML view pane in SQL Management Studio? Everytime I try to view XML output of a query, a warning comes up and when you click OK SQL Assistant is disabled.

The warnign message is "SQL Assistant is unable to join database connection in MS Management Studio. Make sure the connection has been established and working. (Result Code = 0)"

When you run any query with an xml output result for example select * from sys.tables for xml auto and your result output options are set to "Results to Grid". Then click on the xml result set link in the results pane, this will bring up a new window with the xml output. When this new window appears SQL Assistant comes up with the waring.

I see. The window class used for XML window is exactly the same as for SQL editor, yet the window is not connected to the database. Unfortunately there is not much you can do. SQL Assistant is not designed for this type of window and doesn't expect SSMS to reuse window classes for non SQL windows.

Please use for now the Suspend menu to turn off SQL Assistant while you are working with the XML window, then use Resume when you are done.

I am going to enter an engineering request to monitor for SSMS windows with XML content/name and don't activate SQL Assistant in such windows.
