SNMP Service |
|
Hi,
Our server's windows event log is showing error messages received from the 24x7 scheduler:
"24x7 SNMP Extension Agent: Timeout occurred while waiting for trap data."
We don't want to stop the windows SNMP service because we use that to monitor the server, so what can we do to stop this error message from occurring? Thanks.

You can simply uninstall the 24x7 SNMP extension agent. Stop SNMP service for a moment, delete 24x7snmp.dll and then restart SNMP services.
The error message in the event log actually indicates that you are having some problems with SNMP services. Some device or software program is likely generating and sending malformed SNMP traps.

I assume when you say uninstall, that is simply deleting the file 24x7snmp.dll after stopping the SNMP service. There is no uninstaller program that I need to run, correct?
So you are saying other programs are sending bad traps to windows and therefore caused an error message logged under 24x7 scheduler? If so, I'll have my network guys take a look. Thanks.

Yes, you can simply delete the DLL.
Just to clarify the previous statement about bad traps. Here is how the extension agent works. Ultimately the Windows SNMP service is responsible for receiving and forwarding traps. 24x7 installs its own interface in the form of 24x7snmp.dll, which registers with SNMP services as "subscriber" to SNMP traps. The service is responsible for notifying all registered extensions when it receives a new trap and then during the internal service-extension communication process provide the trap data. The messages you found the event logs indicate that the SNMP services notifies 24x7 when traps are received, but not always provides the trap data or somehow it doesn't provide the data fast enough causing the timeout message.
FYI: The 24x7 SNMP extension agent can be used to create trap monitoring jobs that perform various automation functions, for example, when a printer sends "low ink" trap, you can have 24x7 automatically email to MIS personal and notify them about this condition so they can deliver new ink in a timely manner.

I'm getting a message in the Windows Event Viewer (not an error message) that says "24x7 SNMP Extension Agent Started". I had a job running and it failed at the same time this message occured. I'm not sure what's going on here. Would this have caused my job to fail? Also, would uninstalling the 24x7snmp.dll solve this problem. Thank you.

Do you have "Send SMTP trap" notification action enabled for this job?

No, no trap it set. Would the Windows Event Viewer give that message if someone restarted the SNMP service?

I believe this error occurs when some SNMP event is received or generated on the system and SNMP service is misconfigured. I don't know what is exactly wrong with the SNMP configuration. 24x7snmp.dll is installed by default on all systems and only a few people reported seeing that error in the event log. In case if you are not using and not going to use the advanced SNMP features, delete the DLL as described in this message thread, and the error will not recur.
