Brought down Windows...

I wish I could describe this better but here goes...

This was off of a fresh reboot, I fired up Query Analyzer, and connected to my local database.

I typed in "USE " and expected the prompt to come up for the database list. Instead Query Analyzer became unresponsive, as did Windows Explorer. I tried to bring up task manager via CTRL+SHIFT+ESC but it did't work so I tried CTRL+ALT+DELETE. That worked and I chose "Start Task Manager". Task Manager didn't start and my entire screen was black, with only the mouse cursor being displayed. I tried the same steps a couple of times, until finally CTRL+ALT+DELETE stopped working, at which point I had no choice but to perform a hard reboot.

I am sorry to hear this. I assume it occurred on a Vista system? Somebody else also reported this problem recently and it also occurred on Vista.

I'm experiencing exactelly the same issues (windows vista, v2.5.12..).
As explained ChisRickard, everything becomes unresponsive and no way to bring up task manager (screen goes black). I tried waiting for a while (20 min) but nothing changed.
It happens often enough to be very anoying.

I'm considering buying a software like SQL Assist for my company but this issue is too critical.
Can you tell me if you plan to fix this in a near future?

-software running asside SQL Assistance (auto launch): Ad muncher, MSN 8.1, Snag It, NOD 32 v2.7, Daemon Tools v4.09HE
-Always using SQL Assistance with SQL Management Studio + VS Studio 2005.
-When i suspend it, the problem doesn't seems to occur
-Also i got used to immediately suspend it just after a reboot because it happened to freeze my system just after a reboot too (SQL Management Studio not running)

Hi everybody,

We've developed special version of SQL Assistant to help with troubleshooting Vista lockups issues. Please help us identify the problem on your systems so we can fix it for you. Here is what we are asking to do.

1. Shutdown SQL Assistant if it is running on your Vista machine.
2. Backup C:\Program Files\SQL Assistant folder to some other folder on your disk.
3. Download http://www.softtreetech.com/sqlassist/builds/2.5.16_preview.zip and unzip it into the folder mentioned above
4. Open command line and navigate to C:\Program Files\SQL Assistant folder. Start SQL Assistant using the following command
sqlassist.exe "/SA:TraceLogLevel:9"
5. Do what is necessary to reproduce the locking keyboard/mouse issue
6. Restart the system and after restart either post the contents of email C:\Program Files\SQL Assistant\data\sqlassist.log file or email it to support.

Your help with resolving this issue is greatly appreciated.

my trial version is expired so it throws the "expired message" - i have the 2.5.16 preview all ready to go except for this issue - as soon as you give me some way to get past the trial expiration i will test it for you....\

actually the program still shows up in my task bar and so i repeated the steps of opening VS2005 and then opening SSMS with a runas different user and while the tool is not giving me intelisense its not locking up the keyboard....

i did start it with the trace switch -- is there a location it writes the trace log to?

The log file can be found in the Data subfolder. Please email to support account (see SQL Assistant's About page in the options) and I will send you a license key to use for the testing.

i can get the about window to come up from the icon in the icon tray but since the program is expired i cannot get to the options about - just the about from the icon tray - there is no email address there - i will surf your site here to look for one and email you the log file....
