Post Converting JAL code to Javascript? Reply with quote
Hi,

We have been using very successfully the Windows version of the Scheduler for sometine now (v 3.4.26). It is a great product!

We now want to upgrade to the Java version since it appears SoftTree have no intention of upgrading the Windows version. Correct me if I am wrong on this, but the dates given for this upgrade have slipped by at least 1 year.

We have written a lot of code and my question is: Do we have to rewrite all the JAL code of the Windows version to JavaScript or I there a tool to convert it automatically?

Thanks
Sotiris

Hi,

We are actually working on a merge of 2 versions together. The Multi-platform version provides virtually all the features of the Windows version. We have recently added VBScript support, including editor and debugger. The only piece is not currently available in the Multi-platform version is a tight integration with the JAL scripting engine which we are expecting to finish soon. In addition, we are adding mode automation methods to the JavaScript engine to make a migration from JAL to JavaScript more transparent, the foal is not abandon JAL but to allow porting of existing Windows-only scripts to multi-platform JavaScript with a push of button so that virtually identical scripts can be run on multiple platforms

On the other hand, we are going to support the Window version even after the merge version becomes available. We might also release an intermediate version of the Windows Edition in case if the full merge takes too long.

If you are interested, I can send you a download link for one of the recent beta builds.

Having said that, I suggest not to convert anything now, but to wait until the JAL engine becomes integrated into the Multi-platform version and a migration Wizard can seamlessly convert your current job database file to a new format. It is our job to make the transition simple, not your.

Thanks.

Thank you for the valuable advice, I'll hold on a while longer.

There is nothing specific missing from the current version, however, I want to move with the product and not get into a situation where we are so far behind that the cost of migrating becomes too much.

Also, working with a structured language, rather than JAL, is a much better proposition.

Please send me the links for the latest builds if you can.

Is the Migration tool available inbetween? This Post is by May 2007 and we are nearly 2 years later.

As we encounter a lot of problems with the Web Console and the remote Control of the Windows Version we think about migrating to the Multi Platform Edition but we do not like to lose a lot of settings. Is there a Utility or at least a guide available for the Upgrade?

Kind Regards
Christian

JAL is already available and packaged with 24x7 MP as a standalone script engine. JAL scripts can be executed via command line JALScript utility. For details, run "jalscript /?"

Standalone JAL editor is also installed with MP edition, you can double click on a file with JAL extension in Windows explorer and it will open it in the editor.

Next maintenance version should provide integrated JAL editor, direct JAL execution (internally it will call the same command line interface) and hopefully the migration tools will be ready by the time the next maintenance version is released, which is expected sometime next month.
