I'm in process of evaluation scheduling software, including 24x7 Scheduler.

I am running the Windows edition(3.4.26) in the role of master/controller and the Java application(2.1 build 113) as remote agents hosted an various flavours of Unix.

The platform I am using is Windows XP SP1 with Java 1.4.2_08-b03.

Onto the issues...

In the Windows application I have created some jobs. I have now gone into the Dependency tool and drop in some jobs and drawn in dependencies.
I am finding that my diagram is being cleared. Here are two scenarios where this happens:

1) I click apply. Close the tool, then return to it. Nothing there.
2) I click auto-arrange (regardless of whether I have applied or not). It vanishes.

My next issue, not sure whether this is classed a bug or just isn't a feature.
The job database files are not compatible between the Windows application and the Java application?
I should point out that the above 'vanishing dependency' issue is not affecting the Java version of the application.

Hi,

1. You cannot use multi-platform Java scheduler as an agent for a Windows-only scheduler version. Windows-only version has its own agents and can only work with these types of agents only. It can also with RA (remote automation) servers using them as Unix and Linux agents. Don't confuse RA servers with scheduler software.

On the other hand, the latest versions of the multi-platform Java scheduler can use Windows schedulers and agents as its agents. Windows scheduler must run in the server mode in order to be able to process remote network requests.

2. Second, the job database files are not compatible between the Windows and Java versions. Please don't attempt to switch them. If you need to copy some stuff between files, use in the Java version "Tools/Import Jobs From Remote 24x7 Scheduler" menu to copy jobs and folders between schedulers.

3. I think the reason the dependencies got vanished is that something is presently screwed in the job database file, which in turn is causing the problem with dependencies; most likely definitions of jobs that you are trying to link aren't good. Try creating a new job database file and new jobs and see if you can reproduce the problem.

4. And last, the Java version you are running is quite old. Please the previous message thread for a link to the latest Java scheduler build.

I also suggest visiting http://www.24x7automation.com to learn more about RA servers and agents. Just keep in mind that the Java version doesn't really need them as it can run natively on most platforms that are capable of running Java 1.4 or later.

Thanks for your quick response.
The point regarding the job database becoming 'screwed' is a little worrying.
Reliability and robustness is of upmost concern. In a production environment, this would not
be an acceptable risk for us.

I am reviewing some other packages and will return to this application at a later date.
