Post Bloated log crashes system Reply with quote

A system monitor determined that our scheduler (24x7) was not running. I investigated and indeed determined that it was not loaded. I attempted to restart it, but 24x7 was into almost 5 minutes of "reading log" when i finally terminated it.

I determined that the log file was almost 50 mb in size, even tho i had limited it to just 2000 entries. I guess this control only works during start up, not during operation. An oversight? It would be great if the log file size detector could also monitor size during operation.

I'm know why the log file bloated as there are repetitive entries in the log file starting early morning 1 april. What is strange are the entries themselves, which i have placed below this message. Any hints?

Post Re: Bloated log crashes system Reply with quote

The log entries rotation should work almost always when log entries are created the scheduler. However, if you write to log from asynchronous jobs these entries are added to the log file only and for performance reasons the log file is not truncated. If you had 24x7 running for a while with lots of asynchronous jobs the log file could grow big. Of course, to load, sort and format 50 Mb file may take a long time. Please start 24x7 and let it "read" the file and truncate it. You can also truncate that file manually using Notepad or other editor.

As for the log entries, I don't see anything special. Can you explain what's wrong? Was there any effect of the time shift last night?

It ordinarily hasn't been a problem that we run lots of asynchronous jobs (and the log file is not truncated in these circumstances), except in this case where we received the repeated warning.

Regarding not seeing anything unusual, the repeating of this message seems strange:
>>: 4/1/2001 03:00:06 1 85 AOP Server Disk Space monitor Job skipped due to 43
>>: minute(s) delay. Maximum allowed delay is 10 minute(s).

>>Was there any effect of the time shift last night?
Nothing obvious. Although the error did occur between 1 and 3 pm. Perhaps this had something to do with it, as Windows rolls the clock back one hour. Wonder if this screwed up the scheduler?

Regarding "AOP Server Disk Space monitor", how often do you run this job?

Judging by the name of this job, it doesn't look like a job can cause problems for other jobs or processes. Why it cannot start if it is late?

If this is not a problem and the job can be run anytime, uncheck "Skip late job" box in the job properties and the warning will not appear anymore.

Every hour.

Good point. It was also not running as an asynchronous job. I made the changes. Hopefully this will help.

Thanks very much,

Mark

A similar problem occurred with one of my jobs that's supposed to run every hour. The time change had to have been the cause of it, but I don't know if there's any way to determine if it was a 24x7 bug or a Windows bug. Here's a portion of my log:

04/01/01 04:50:01 0 17 NATR Hourly Files Shared Job started.
04/01/01 04:50:04 0 17 NATR Hourly Files Shared Job finished.

This kept running every second until I manually terminated the process this morning. I manually stripped the log of these entries and restarted the scheduler, after which everything was fine. Luckily, none of our processes were adversely affected. So I don't know if you guys can look into this, but it could be a problem again when the time change occurs next time.

: The log entries rotation should work almost always when log entries are
: created the scheduler. However, if you write to log from asynchronous jobs
: these entries are added to the log file only and for performance reasons
: the log file is not truncated. If you had 24x7 running for a while with
: lots of asynchronous jobs the log file could grow big. Of course, to load,
: sort and format 50 Mb file may take a long time. Please start 24x7 and let
: it "read" the file and truncate it. You can also truncate that
: file manually using Notepad or other editor.

: As for the log entries, I don't see anything special. Can you explain what's
: wrong? Was there any effect of the time shift last night?

Looks more like a 24x7 bug. If the job is skipped why it should not be tried again next second?

: A similar problem occurred with one of my jobs that's supposed to run every
: hour. The time change had to have been the cause of it, but I don't know
: if there's any way to determine if it was a 24x7 bug or a Windows bug.
