Post Logon.exe only works after initial logon Reply with quote
I am able to get logon.exe to work after I have logged in and then logged off. If the computer is restarted and is showing the lock dialog and I try to run logon.exe the logon prompt goes away and I see a blue background with a cursor.
I can use psexec to run explorer.exe to tell the computer that is 'waiting' to start from another computer and the computer will then boot into the OS. However, even though it shows that I am logged in using the account I specified, it is not the correct 'profile'. It does not have the correct background and certain features do not work such as CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the prompt to choose task manager, lock the computer, etc. I can right click on the task bar and click task manager and it will bring up the task manager.
I get the same results using both Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003.
I have tried executing logon.exe using both AutoExNT (from Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit, also applies to Windows XP Pro) and using psexec to try and remotely execute it. Both give the same results.

Are you using our logon utility? http://www.softtreetech.com/24x7/archive/51.htm

On XP did you disable Fast User Switching?

Are you using a domain account, and are you sure you're sending the domain along with the account to the login dialog? Are you attempting this on a remote computer? Are you looking for some different functionality? Please check the message at Sun Apr 04, 2004 11:24 pm in the following thread to see if it covers what you want to do: http://www.softtreetech.com/support/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=14475&sid=bb3653ac828e5e63f2129fff1c1ea63f

Yes.

I am not currently using a domain account, but I have tried to send the username both by itself and with the computername\username method. The thing I can’t figure out is that sending the username and password works remotely if the computer has been logged into and then logged out of by a local user. The logon prompt appears to be the same.

Yes. I am trying to use psexec http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553 to start logon.exe http://www.softtreetech.com/24x7/archive/51.htm that was copied to a remote computer. The reason is that eventually I would like to use your tool to unlock about 200 computers on a test bed.

I am not sure. From reading the blogs and product description this seems to be a common usage of the tool. I even tried to script it to run on startup which was suggested in the tool description but had the same results.

I tried to use BindDesktop.exe http://www.softtreetech.com/24x7/archive/43.htm to run logon.exe using AutoExNT http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243486 on the local machine in order to try and have the computer logon after it was restarted.

Would these happen to be remote desktop login screens? The login.exe utility doesn't support terminal services.

No. Like I said I have tried it using AutoExNT http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243486 on the machine itself. I am not using remote desktop at all. Logon.exe works to remotely logon to the computer, but only after a person sitting at the remote computer logs in and then logs off one time when the computer has been powered on.

The utility works only when the logon screen is visible. It actually interacts with that screen. If you run it before the logon screen is displayed, it won't work.
You can use scheduled windows task to run the logon.exe, No need for AutoExNT.
