Post Scheduler Startup Mode on Master Console Reply with quote

Hi,

I have the 24x7 agents running on my remote servers using a privilided
Admin account set up for them purpose and I wish to set up the 24x7 master
Scheduler on a seperate system using the full 24x7 scheduler.

I am designing a job to run on the 24x7 scheduler system to backup remote
data shares from a variety of servers running the remote agent.

As the volume of data could grow quite large I intend to use the SyncRemoteDir command to
copy the remote data back to the central data share and use SyncLocalDir to backup the
central copy to another folder.

I would like the job to be able to communicate it's progress using emailed status/error messages.

It is also important that the main 24x7 scheduler is started when the server reboots and is
not dependant on a priviledged user being logged on although a priviledged Admin account
will be used for accessing the 24x7 console.

What is the best way to set up/start the 24x7 master scheduler service on theconsole and also
the 24x7 remote agent services on the remote servers given the requirements outlined above ?

Regards,

Jim

The service will start automatically if you set it up under LocalSystem or domain admin account. LocalSystem is not good in your case because it cannot access network so you are limited to the domain admin account.

You can use MailSend commands between Sync... to email progress of work. If the number of emails grows exponentially or simply becomes annoying after a week or two I suggest switching to a different monitoring method.

For example, you can turn on HTML status reports feature in the scheduler. Between Sync... calls you would add calls to LogAddMessageEx to log job progress of work. You can the monitor resulting HTML files from virtually anywhere using your favorite web browser. Files will be updated in a near-real time.

Another similar method is to enable logging to Windows Application Event Log. Using LogAddMessage you can add your own progress messages. Using Windows Event Viewer you can the remotely open server log and monitor it from there.

Other methods include updating database tables and monitoring them using some other application; using 24x7 Event Server to monitor transferred files and email or log or whatever as the operation progresses and so on...

Many thanks,

Looks like I will start off with the MailSend version and work up to the Web based solution ;)

Does it matter whether I use SMTP or MAPI email from the Job on the
master scheduler if the Master Scheduler service is started as you describe ?

You cannot use MAPI if you run 24x7 as a service.
