1. Oracle 8i is the short name of Oracle 8.1.5 2. DBMS drop-down selection simple tells the system what Oracle CLIENT software you want to use to establish a connection and it has nothing to do directly with your TNSNAMES.ORA file. dbMonitor and other components look for corresponding Oracle OCI DLLs which in turn read your TNSNAMES.ORA. Note that different Oracle versions have different "client" interfaces, and different bugs as well. For example Oracle 8.1.5 OCI DLLs do not shut down gracefully, creating a memory leak. On some systems it causes a second connection from dbTools to fail (even cause GPF). In order to connect to your Oracle 8i server you can, but you are not required to use Oracle 8.1.5 client software. If you have SQL*Net 2.x and Oracle 7 RSF (required support files) installed you can also use appropriate Oracle 7.x interface to connect to Oracle 8i server you can even use an ODBC connection to connect to your Oracle server, however Oracle own ODBC driver is very buggy and it is not recommended. There are exist other ODBC drivers available from Inersolve, Microsoft and other. We are also recommending Oracle 7.3 interface as the most stable and bug free. Again using any interface you should be able to connect to any Oracle server 7.x or 8.x running on any platform. 3. The tool is capable to work with Oracle 8i and we successfully use it internally. : Was this an automated message? I went through the help documentation before : posting the first message. The help document states: (DBMS O71,O72,O73) : The tnsnames.ora file was not found in Oracle_HOME\NETWORK\ADMIN : directory. : (DBMS OR8) The tnsnames.ora file was not found in Oracle_HOME\NET80\ADMIN : directory. : HOWEVER, the tnsnames.ora file is in the Oracle_Home\Network\Admin directory : for 8i, there is not a NET80 directory. So by selecting Oracle 8 from the : drop down menu, where is it looking for the file, in both places? Has : anyone successfully used this tool with Oracle 8i?
