Post Using DBAudit with Sybase Reply with quote

Hi:
I installed the trial version of the DBAudit and
configured it to connect to my Sybase 12.5 server
I got an error message when I connected to the server
stating that the SYBSECURITY database is not installed
and the graphic user interface will be disabled. I was
able to connect to the databse but when I clicked on the
"Data Audit" icon it listed only some system tables but
not the tables I need to audit.
My question is:
1. Do I need the SYBSECURITY database installed to
use DBAudit?
2. We have multiple databases on the same Sybase server.
How do I sepecify which database to audit?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi,

There are two types of auditing supported:

1. System Audit is used to audit system and user activity, including logons, object access, security changes, and so on. For this type of auditing you must have sybsecurity installed. There is a script in Sybase directory on the server that can be used to install it. For specific details on the script name please see DB Audits User's Guide or your Sybase manual. When you have this thing configured you can choose to audit everything or filter the auditing down to specific databases, operation types, objects or logins.

2. Data-change Audit is used to audit table updates and capture before and after values so that a complete trace can be produced of data changes with before and after values. You don't need sybsecurity for that. Of course you would need to select which tables to audit. In order to select the target tables, first pick the target database from the drop-down list on the top of the DB Audit Console window then go to Data-audit screen. If you need to audit several databases, repeat this for every database.

Based on the information in the DBAudit User's Guide and my limited experience working with the trial version,
is it true that DBAudit does not track SELECT queries therefore not able to track "view" only access to
database records?
This is a significant need for our industry (Health Care). Is there future plan to add this support for Sybase?
Thanks!

Of course it can track SELECT. It can track any type of database activity. My guess you are reading Data-change auditing chapter. Please take a look at System audting chapter. You will find what you want there.
