Post UTL_FILE_DIR parameter Reply with quote

Hi

I am trying to evaluate DB-TOOLS for usage in my company.
Most of the databases we have are of 9i or greater version.
While trying to configure the DB-ALERT tool it asks for the UTL_FILE_DIR
to be set to the path for bdump. As the UTL_FILE_DIR would be obselete
from future versions

1. Can we use the oracle directories for this.If so, can you please provide an example.
2. If not, is there any alternative work around for this as it is not possible in my case
to bounce every database to reset the init parameters.

Thanks,
smarupak.

UTL_FILE_DIR is not completely absolete and it is required for security. DB Tools uses UTL_FILE to read alert log files. If you don't set UTL_FILE_DIR the procedure will fail accesing alert log files.

Therefore
1. The answer is No
2. Pprior to Oracle9i, you must bounce the database, but in 9i and up you can set this parameter dynamically

ALTER SYSTEM SET utl_file_dir = 'my_path_list';

2a) You don't need to do that if UTL_FILE_DIR is already set to *
