Sorry, it took so longto answer your question. This is a very rare error and here is ful description and explanation for it.

The 10053 error can occur when the local network system aborts a connection. This would occur if WinSock aborts an established connection fails after or during data transmission (for example, email server never acknowledges data sent on a datastream socket).
TCP/IP scenario: A connection will timeout if the local system doesn't receive an (ACK)nowledgement for data sent. It would also timeout if a (FIN)ish TCP packet is not ACK'd (and even if the FIN is ACK'd, it will eventually timeout if a FIN is not returned).

Solution: Make sure your network connection is working properly and email server is not shutdown/restarted during data transmissions.

Vinod--
"Make sure your network connection is working properly" is rather open ended. Network seems fine but I have yet to do major diagnostics. Is there a specific list of checks to perform to isolate the issue?

Sure. Install some email client software, for example free Outlook Express, configure it to use SMTP and connect it to your server (setup some account). Let it run for a few days. Check if it will complain about 10053 error or similar. If yes, you may a have a problem with your network card, cables, etc… causing network connection drops or lost packets.

I also figured out (the hard way...) that MacAfee 8.0 blocks port 25 by default.
Open the VirusScan console, and go to Properties under Task. The first thing
that comes up is port blocking. Uncheck the block on port 25, and you'll be back
in business.
