Post connect Reply with quote

Just installed DBMail, and I can not connect to the database. I can connect from SQLPlus, but not from the mail console. I am running Oracle 8.1.7 and trying to connect to a server running Oracle 8.1.7. The error message I am getting is :
ERROR (WEB) Database not available: ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve service name
ERROR: Error connecting to WEB
My database alias is WEB, which is the name of the database, the database service, the name of trhe TNS entry on the local computer, and the name of the service that the listener is looking for.

Any ideas?

I failed to mention that I have tried to trace the connection through the DBMail tool. I can get a SQL trace file when connecting through SQLPlus, but there is not a trace file generated when only using DBMail.

It looks like you have specified incorrect value for the "Server name"

Because the database server runs on the same computer you can either enter your computer name or leave the Server field blank.

I want to connect to a remote UNIX database. In the TNSNames file, the server name is defined as an IP address. The Windows machine the DBMail tool is on does not see the server name, so I use the IP address for the server name in the TNSNames file.
Does the mail tool need to be on the same server as the database? If not, how do you specify a UNIX server's name. Do I need to add an entry for the lmhosts file to resolve the server name to the ip address?

No it does not have to be on the same machine.

You can enter your server IP address into the Server Name filed in DB Mail.
As long as you can connect from the SQL*Plus you should be able to connect from DB Mail, just specify the connection parameters. Note that the "Server" field in DB Mail matches the "Host String" field on the logon dialog in SQL*Plus

Thanks for your help. I am connected to the server now. The problem was that I was using the name/ip address of the database server, rather than the TNS Service name of the alias.
Thanks again.
