Post SQL Assistant 9.0 Beta Version Reply with quote
Build 9.0.144 is now available for testing

We are excited to announce v9.0 beta availability. That's correct, we mean version 9, not 8. This is one of the most significant releases in the entire SQL Assistant history. There are so many big changes that we've decided to skip number 8.

Here is a list of major new features:
    1. Support for 32-bit and 64-bit development environments, 64-bit target editors, 32-bit and 64-bit database drivers and clients. All of that is packaged together and delivered by a single installation program.
    2. Full support of Unicode in code, data, and files.
    3. Support for 3 new data warehouse database systems: Teradata, IBM Netezza, and Pivotal Greenplum.
    4. Database Modeling
    5. Graphical Data Access and Code Dependencies, as well as Data Flows.
    6. New interactive SQL Reference systems for SQL Server 2014 and 2016, SQL Azure database, Teradata 14 and 15, Oracle 12c, Netezza 7, Access 2007 and 2010, PostgreSQL 9.5, and Redshift.
    7. Significant SQL Intellisense improvements including enhanced support for analytical and window functions.
    8. Native PostgreSQL connectivity (libPQ).
    9. Enhanced SQL code execution mode using ADO.NET and native connections supporting asynchronous printing of message sent from stored procedures and internal database commands while they run.
    9. Graphical data editing plus Excel style auto-stats on multiple cell selection in result sets.
    10. Many database type specific enhancements, including but not limited to support of PosgreSQL materialized views, DB2 procedures with overloaded parameters, support for new data types, including intervals, execution of anonymous PL/pgSQL blocks in PosgreSQL, processing of COPY command in PostgreSQL scripts, and so on...
    11. Virtual filters in Code Structure View (filter code by schema object references), this is a life saver for anyone working with complex procedures and deployment scripts.
    12. Enhancements in Task and Reminders.
    13. Enhancements in Code automation Snippets with new options and extensions in macro variables.
    14. Enhanced management of SQL Assistant options with across the board filters by database type.
    15. Multi-database Update Statistics and table space management functions.
    16. 32-bit and 64-bit versions of SQL Assistant Professional SQL Editor.
    17. Compatibility changes for supporting latest releases of SQL Server Management Studio 2016, pgAdmin and Toad.
    18. Compatibility changes for supporting Windows 10.
    19. Enhancements in the Data Transfer tools - many new data type mappings added for enhanced cross-platform support.
    20. Lots of other minor changes and enhancements.

Could you please email a copy of your SQLAssist.log file from %APPDATa%\SQL Assistant\9.0 folder to support? The log file may have important details that can help identity the cause of the issue.

thank you very much for the log. We will certainly look into that. I think the issue is related to running SQL assistant on Windows 10 64-bit with 64-bit apps. We are working on that, hope to have a fix soon.

Build 9.0.151 is now available. Among other fixes it contains fixes for handling 64-bit targets on Windows 10 systems. Crashes should no longer occur.

While the downloaded file says it is v 9.0.151 indeed, the page still shows 9.0.144 as being the last version.

Build 9.0.152 is now available.

Here is a consolidated list of fixes in builds 9.0.145 to 9.0.152:
1. Fixes in the installer for updating registry entries specific to SQL Assistant's add-on registration for SSMS - correction of left overs from previous versions blocking add-on loading.
2. Crashes in 64-bit applications when SQL Assistant is run on Windows 10 64-bit systems.
3. PGSqlClient.Init exception - Can't find C:\Program Files (x86)\SQL Assistant 7\data\PGx86\libpq.dll. Looking for dlls in a wrong folder.
4. Database Modeling dialog - cannot move connector lines in ER diagrams.
5. Misaligned values in mouse over stats in data previews and results.
6. SQL Editor - Refresh cache doesn't refresh database list in the toolbar drop-down.
7. Exporting results from Count Rows dialog to Excel leads to eventual crash.
8. Test data generator and several other tools don't work with native PostgreSQL connections.
9. Multiple anomalies related to display and processing of double precision numbers when using native PostgreSQL connections.
10. PostgreSQL and ODBC connections - syntax check thread hanging randomly and not aborting on code run.
11. SQL Editor - Replace Text dialog, the Replace All function always replaces in the entire document ignoring "Selected Text" option.
12. Object's popup and $OBJECT$ macro occasionally shows duplicate entries when users type filter
13. Data preview and result grids- cell multi-line value indicator is not always shown.
14. Data preview and result grids- copying cell contents with multi-line values, line breaks lost.
15. Adding LIMIT clause to SQL statement disables SQL intellisense for the current statement.
16. Contents of some code snippets inserted incorrectly.
17. Netezza - EXPLAIN PLAN not returning correct results.
18. Fixes for several types of run-time exceptions.

Post Netezza connection requirements Reply with quote
We have several people here that are excited about prospect of using SQL Assistant to work on Netezza. However, my first attempt I got an error trying to connect to Netezza instances that I did not have access to one of the system databases.

Client: Release 7.2.1.2 [Build 47843]
Server: 07.02.0001 Release 7.2.1.2 [Build 47843]
SQL State: HY000
ERROR: Permission denied on "_T_DATABASE".;

Our DBAs seem to have resolved that initial issue, but when I connect now I don't see any objects in the Explorer pane. DBAs want to know what else I may need access to - like system views, system tables, rights, etc in order to get schema details from our instances. Do you have any documentation specific to Netezza connections and using SQL Assistant with it?

Please have a look at database queries used with Netezza. They are all in the Options and customizable if needed. Look for DB Queries section on DB Options tab. To make it easier, in the Options dialog set a filter for Netezza, see the filter drop-down at the bottom of the dialog.

What I meant is that in the queries you can find out all referenced database catalog objects and figure out what permissions you would need.

Thanks - I see what you are referring to and it looks like that will provide enough details to get going.
