Post Loading of Object Explorer add-in failed (SSMS 2012) Reply with quote
Hello!

Windows 7, SSMS 2012, SQL Assistant 6.3.153, then 6.3.171.

When I start SSMS I get this message:

Loading of Object Explorer add-in failed
Error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation

In SSMS SQL Assistant works fine: main menu item, editor context menu item, code editing assistant.

I have tried re-register add-ons as recommended here http://www.softtreetech.com/support/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=23779 And I have tried reinstall SQL Assistant. It didn't help

Hello. Do you get this error when starting SSMS in "Run as Administrator" mode?

Is there an error number displayed below the error message?

Do you see any related errors in SQL Assistant's error log file?
%APPDATA%\SQL Assistant\6.2\SQLAssist.log

The log file is old. There are no recent data.

In error message was only that text.

It's strange, but the error has disappeared. After I installed this two add-ins (http://www.ssmsboost.com http://www.sqlcodeguard.com/) I no longer get an error.

Post Same Error Message Reply with quote
Hello,
I have the same problem.
When I start SSMS I get this message:

Loading of Object Explorer add-in failed
Error: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

I use Windows 8, SQL Server Enterprise 2012 with SP1, SQL Assistant 6.3.153.

My friend don't get this error. His system is the same as mine. But he use SQL Server 2012 without SP1.

I repaired SQL Server, I uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Assistant then unregistered and then re-registered, but it didn't work.

Please try starting SSMS in "Run as Administrator" mode. Do you still get the same error?

Seldom I get this error. But I don't understand cause of error.
Maybe when SSMS starts with object explorer and without open code editor window.

To anda_pro:

From your last post it is not clear if you got the same error when starting SSMS in admin mode. Can you confirm?
As far as I see you are running latest version of SSMS 2012 on Windows 8. Is that correct?
Is the User Account Control enabled on your system?

Did you mean "Administrator" user name or "Run as Administrator" run time mode? If the first, you need to start SSMS and SQL Assistant once in Run as Administrator mode and then register SQL Assistant add-on using the Options dialog. Please see the documentation on how to register SQL Assistant Add-on for SSMS if you need more info. Please note that if you don't use "Run as Administrator" mode, Windows will silently delete all your configuration changes and the add-on will not load or work correctly.

Thanks for you answer.
But I still getting the same error. There are two things that I don't understand.
This is the situation:
If I logging on with "Administrator" (user name), and registering SQL Assistant Add-on, it works perfectly.
But logging on as User with Administrator profile, an executing SQL server and SqlAssistant with "Run as Administrator" doesn't work.

When you wrote the solution, didn't explained what to do when "Run as Administrator" under an other User with Administrator privileges.

Now I can log on into Administrator account to work this out, but I need to log on with my UserName.

So, this is the situation, could you help me?

Best regards.

Lucas

You are dealing with so called Windows User Account Control (UAC). In Windows versions Vista and up, it doesn't care much what your user name is or user group(s) you belong to. It assumes "least needed" privilege for everything. So unless you use a setup program and specifically use Run as Administrator mode for obtaining the elevated privileges, any changes you make in the system registry where most settings are stored, are sucked by Windows without errors but then silently redirected to a different registry hive or just undone without any warnings. In that light, if you run SSMS and SQL Assistant as yourself and register an add-on, your changes do not stick. Windows clears them as soon as you close the programs of log off.

Here is what you can try. Run SQL Assistant setup program as yourself, and using the setup program register SQL Assistant add-on for SSMS (make sure that add-on is selected in the list of add-ons to install). Windows should allow the setup program to do what it doesn't allow you to do from SSMS and SQL Assistant.
