The "native code" installation instructions on http://www.softtree.com/24x7/ra-eval.shtml give as the last steps:

Install 24x7 RA Server using either default or custom options, for example you can run ./ra_server install -f /24x7/ra_server/ra_server.log -p 1096

Start 24x7 RA Server using ./ra_server command. If you want to use a non-default port number for connections or a different log file name start the server using option command line parameters, for example ./ra_server -p 1096 -f log.txt -s

I notice that last step is not in your PDF doc. Since the step before puts it in xinetd.d should that be enough, or does it also require an instance that's been started as in the next step? If it does require the last step, there's a difficulty because it stops if you leave the terminal session, even if started with a "&" at the end (i.e., does not know how to daemonize properly). That can be worked around by starting it in a detached screen session. But then it's unclear, since this step isn't in the PDF version of your instructions, whether it's really a proper part of running ra_server at all.

Also, your documentation makes no mention of just how ra_server installs to xinetd.d. It would be useful to many if you expanded your documentation to include a section detailing just what your installation process does - including copying ra_server to /usr/sbin and adding it to /etc/services.

We've been having ra_server stall out, which got interpreted by other staff as "ra_server isn't starting right," which led us to your web page which says to start it in a terminal session as above - which is strange if it needs that in addition to xinetd, especially when it doesn't start well that way in terms of daemonization. Now, I suspect the real problem has been that sometimes when ra_server is starting perl scripts, for some reason they fail to complete and leave the session open, filling up the maximum instances it will run. Still, that leads to a "ra_server's not running" complaint, which leads to your web page on getting it running, which has that questionable instruction. Please clarify.

That step is not required for native code RA agents which are extensions for inetd and don't need to be started manually. However that step is required for Java based Universal agent.

And just in case... RA agents are used with 24x7 Scheduler Windows Edition to allow it running jobs on Unix and Linux systems. They are not required for 24x7 Scheduler Multi-platform Edition whose agents can run directly on most system types and they support a lot more functions and options. The support for 24x7 Scheduler Windows Edition is going to be discontinued by the end of this year. If you are looking for a new installation, I suggest not to spend time on RA agents now and go straight to the 24x7 Multi-platform Edition.
